CRUISING THE CHILEAN FJORDS AND AMALIA GLACIERS, CHILE
FEBRUARY 23, 2013
"The mountains are fountains of men as of rivers, of glaciers, of fertile soil. The great poets, philosophers, prophets, able men whose thought and deed have moved the world, have come down from the mountains."- From John Muir, America's most famous & influential conservationists.
After leaving Punta Arenas, we started our voyage up to the west coast of South America. Another SPECIAL day at sea. Today, cruising of the Chilean Fjords was a delight. The entire morning, the weather was a bit overcast and misty. We had already entered passage as there were islands on both sides of the ship. As the day progressed the sunny skies appeared on & off. The panoramic views became impressive w/ waterfall, islets, lighthouse, jagged mountain peaks, icebergs, etc. as they paraded before us.

HERE COMES THE AMALIA GLACIER!
A CLOSER VIEW. APPROXIMATELY 73 SQUARE MILES IN AREA. AMALIA'S MAMOTH BLUE MOUNTAIN OF ICE WAS SPECTACULAR TO BEHOLD
Who knew glaciers were blue? That they would be so moving? I didn't. Not just sort of blue but deep blue. Glaciers appeared blue because sunlight (which appeared white) was made up of all the colors of the rainbow. Only blue had enough energy to get through the dense glacial ice. The reds & yellows got absorbed.
GLACIAL WONDER OF WALL OF ICE
A CLOSE-UP VIEW OF THE AMALIA GLACIER. YES, THE ICE WAS BLUISH.
CLOSE-UP OF MASSIVE GLACIER
Located in the central part of the Southern Patagonian ice fields, the Amalia Glacier descended
from the Andes mountains. Sitting & towering above the sea. Because of the glaciers immense weight, the oxygen had been pressed out of the ice. Giving it an amazingly beautiful crystalline appearance.
HOLA FROM AMALIA GLACIER!
BIENVENIDOS! WELCOME TO AMALIA GLACIER!
EXCITING! THRILLING!
Seeing a REAL piece of massive glacier for the first was a thrilling experience for us. Living in California, U.S.A., we were not fond of extreme weather destinations. So Alaska & Norway are in the bottom of our bucket list. It was FUN being here. Alaska & Norway are now on our bucket list, someday. Many raved about this places. That thought, these places beat Amalia. We have yet to see those other COLD places. As an artist, I knew that beauty is always subjective. One might be beautiful to others. It might not be beautiful to me. If a place has heart and soul, its surely beautiful in my artistic standard.
GLACIER WATCHER
CRUISING THE CHILEAN FJORDS AND ENJOYING THE AMALIA GLACIER.....OH YEAH!
WE WERE HERE! WISH YOU WERE HERE TOO! FROM AMALIA GLACIER, CHILE
AMAZING GLACIER VIEW FROM OUR STATEROOM
Finally, the captain brought the ship into the glacier and spin it around twice, so every cabin could have a spectacular view. We stayed in the area for about an hour. Seeing the Chilean Fjords & Amalia Glacier were truly one-in-a-lifetime sights to behold.
Time to say "ADIOS!" again. Well, life is short. See a GLACIER soon. Stay in one place too long and sometimes it really seemed that you could feel the grass growing underfoot. That's when you know for certain , it's time to GO, to MOVE on.
This post started w/ a quote from John Muir. I'd like to end it w/ a beautiful song from the "Sound Of Music." ........."Climb every mountain, Search high and low, Follow every highway,
Every path you know.
Climb every mountain, Ford every stream, Follow every rainbow, 'Till you find your DREAM."
